Around Centreville

Historic Centreville

"Its situation is elevated and highly picturesque affording one of the best mountain prospects in the state of Virginia. It has always been remarkable for the salubrity of its air and the health of its inhabitants" .... from a 19th C advertisment for the Centreville Academy
Centreville is one of the oldest communities in Fairfax County. A number of historic homes, churches, and earthworks remain in the area. Many sites are concentrated within the Centreville Historic District, but there are places of historic interest throughout the area. Click on the links below to learn more.

The Centreville Sears Catalog House
In 1934 the Spindle family built a house they ordered from a Sears catalog that arrived in boxes on a train in Herndon. Mrs Spindle lived in the house until the 1980s, when she finally sold it. Empty, it awaited demolition to make room for a new development that never happened. Over the years, the Spindles made hardly any changes and this Brentwood model was recognized as significant for being in its near-original state. Today it is being fully restored by the Park Authority.
