The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized workrelated expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Best of all, census takers work right in their own communities.

Census taker jobs are excellent for people who want to work part-time, those who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community.

You may qualify for a job if:

• You are able to read, write, and speak English.

• You are a U.S. citizen.

• You are a legal permanent resident, or non-citizen with an appropriate work visa, and you possess a bilingual skill for which there are no available qualified U.S. citizens.

• You are at least 18 years old.

• You have a valid social security number.

• You take a written test of basic skills.

• You have a valid driver's license.

• You pass a background check.

• You cpmmit to four days of training. You will be paid for training days. Training can be held either during daytime hours or during evening and weekend hours.

U.S. citizens are given hiring preference. However, if we need to hire someone with a particular language skill and no U.S. citizens are available, lawful permanent residents or conditional permanent residents and non-citizens with an appropriate work visa may be hired.

All census takers must be able to speak English, but people who have bilingual skills are needed in communities where a large number of residents primarily speak other languages. Most hiring will take place during the spring of 2010. Job offers depend on several factors, such as the availability of work in your community, test score, language skills, veterans' preference, and the number of hours you are available to work each week. Please understand that not every qualified applicant who takes the employment test and applies will be offered a census job. Job offers are made by the Local Census Office.
