African-American History Month, celebrated every February, was begun in 1926 as Negro History Week by Carter Godwin Woodson.  The son of a former slave, Woodson graduated from Harvard University with a Ph.D. In 1915 he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, and dedicated his life to educating people about contributions made by black men and women throughout history. He chose February to recognize black history in recognition of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. In 1976 President Ford issued the first Message on the Observance of Black History Month.
